scotsman willie park Jr. was his father’s son. willie
sr. won british opens on four occasions; son won
claret jugs in 1887 and 1889. dad was a successful
clubmaker; Junior held patents on several cutting-edge clubs and helped make the family business
one of the most successful in the game circa 1900.
senior designed dozens of courses in great britain
and ireland; park fils did likewise, his portfolio numbering more than 200 designs or modifications, including venues such as Huntercombe, maidstone,
olympia fields, royal Quebec and sunningdale
(old). and now there’s another similarity: willie
Jr. will join his dad as a member of the world golf
Hall of fame in st. augustine, fla. He was selected
through the veterans category last week and
will be inducted along with Ken venturi and fred
couples next may, eight years after his dad gained
the hall. the parks of musselburgh aren’t the first
father-son team in the wgHof (the tom morrises
beat them to that), but they are an impressive one
nevertheless. —Tim Murphy (TimMurphyGW)
