goiNg;to;eXtremes callaway’s raZr fit Xtreme
gives players adjustability options in two areas: face angle
and weight placement. the optifit Hosel allows the face to
be set open, square or closed while weights can be adjusted
to alter the center of gravity and promote either a draw or
neutral flight. the 8.5-, 9.5- and 10.5-degree heads are 440
cubic centimeters and have a more open face angle in the
neutral position and a lower cg compared to the raZr
fit. the higher lofts ( 11. 5 and 13) offer a more draw-biased
design and a larger volume (460 cc). the bulge radius on
the face also changes with each loft as a result of callaway’s
research with players of a wide range of handicaps and club-head speeds. price: $400 (available Jan. 18, 2013).
Noteworthy;looking for a
hint as to what nike’s new tour
ball for 2013 will be? well, there
might have been a clue given last
week when the company unveiled
its one rZn ball to the european
market. as with the 20Xi models,
the ball utilizes a resin core, but it
has a larger core with a different
formulation. the balls will come
in two versions, one rZn and
one rZn X, with the X version
designed to have a slightly firmer
feel and a more penetrating flight.
timely;tweak na Yeon choi
won the lpga titleholders tournament by returning her callaway
raZr fit driver to service after
benching the club for a week. before putting the driver back in the
bag, however, choi used the adjustable weights to place some extra
heft in the heel (which promotes
a slightly more right-to-left ball-flight). the driver is the same club
choi used when she won the u.s.
women’s open at blackwolf run
earlier this year.
forged,;but;forgiviNg
mizuno’s latest iron offering, the
mp-H4, uses hollow, iron-like hybrids
in its long and mid irons and a half-cavity design in the short irons. the
clubs use mizuno’s hallmark grain
flow forging process. the strategically placed trailing edge bevel allows
for a wider sole and deeper center
of gravity for more forgiveness and
cleaner turf interaction. although
the irons are not available for left-handers, those wishing to employ a
2-iron are in luck. price: $1,100.
 white;out oban has introduced
its new Kiyoshi white shaft, which
utilizes oban’s proprietary multiplex design that places material in
the shaft at 0, 45- and 90-degree
angles. doing so reduces ovaling
and produces a more stable shaft.
available in 65 and 75 grams, the
shaft is designed for players with
faster tempos seeking a mid-launch,
low spin ball flight. as the name
suggests, the shaft is white and its
debut comes after several months of
use on the professional tours.
