father/son’s
welcome return
good news for golf: one of the best tournaments
ever invented, the father/son challenge, has been
revived. the 36-hole event, played for 14 straight
years through 2008 as the brainchild of alastair
Johnston of img, will be held again this week at the
ritz-carlton gc in orlando with a new sponsor,
pnc. featured will be a nostalgia-rich Hall-of-fame
field—the 18 fathers have won a collective 66 major
championships—as well as a guaranteed feel-good
filial theme. among the contestants, former winners
Jack nicklaus and dave stockton will partner with
their former pga tour playing sons, gary and david
respectively. meanwhile, larry nelson, who won
with son Josh in 2007 as well as son drew in 2004
and 2008, will attempt to win a fourth title with Josh
and get closer to the five titles fellow contestant
raymond floyd has won with his two sons, robert
and raymond Jr. there will be some obscenely long
hitting, especially by two strapping sons, dru love
and Qass singh, as well as some popgun-but-still-pure shotmaking, most notably by arnold palmer—
playing with grandson will wears—and lee trevino,
playing with son daniel. a great show. —Jaime Diaz
