Golf World’s (Jan. 14) predictions issue will begin showing up in mailboxes thursday,
and one man not selected to win a pga tour event this year is charl schwartzel—and
that could be a mistake. if the 28-year-old south african’s final five weeks of 2012
are a precursor, then look out. the 2011 masters champ, who battled a rib injury for
most of last season, finished fifth in the south african open, t- 3 in the dp world tour
championship in dubai and second in the nedbank golf challenge before runaway
victories at the thailand golf championship (25 under, 11 clear of bubba watson)
and alfred dunhill championship (24 under, winning by 12, the third-largest victory
margin in european tour history). “i was saying last october that it’s been a pretty
disappointing year for me,” revealed schwartzel. “slowly and surely i started swinging
the club better, back to how i did when i won the masters, and i actually got excited
to play again.” look for him to make an impact on the florida swing in march, particularly at doral, where he was second to compatriot ernie els at the 2010 wgc-cadillac
championship. —Barry Havenga (@LooseImpediment)
