erica popson is all of 21 years old, yet in the
world of women’s amateur golf, where having
a driver’s license seems a lot like carrying an
aarp card lately, that qualifies her as an aging veteran. so it was that the davenport, fla.,
resident’s one-stroke win sunday at the 58th
Harder Hall invitational constituted a triumph of
maturity over, well, middle school. playing in the
final group with 13-year-old mika liu, the leader
after the first three rounds, popson watched her
eighth-grader opponent drop a lengthy birdie
putt on the last hole at Harder Hall cc in sebring,
fla., to reach five-under 283. undaunted, popson
proceeded to roll in her own eight-foot birdie try
to close with a 68 and a six-under 282. although
she had won five career college tournaments at
tennessee and built a résumé that helped her earn
a spot on last year’s u.s. curtis cup squad, the
all-american had yet to claim victory in a national
amateur event. a year removed from surgery to
remedy a nagging thumb injury and with the final
semester of her senior season awaiting before
she turns pro, popson looks ready to close out her
amateur career by proving a point: she’s not just
getting older, she’s getting better.
