in the fifth playing of the copa de las americas—a
72-hole competition among amateurs from north,
central and south america—team canada (albin
choi, corey conners, brooke mackenzie Henderson
and, at right, augusta James) shot 25-over-par 1,177
for a one-stroke victory over mexico after choi made
a 12-footer on the 72nd hole at doral’s tpc blue
monster on sunday. team usa finished third, two
behind canada. carlos ortiz and rodolfo cazaubon
of mexico won the men’s crown by four shots with a
combined score of one-under 575; lindy duncan and
erynne lee of the united states won the women’s
division with a 21-over 597 after lee made a crucial
up-and-down on the final hole. since the inaugural
event in 2003, canada and the united states are
the only countries to claim the overall prize (canada
previously in 2003 and 2005; the u.s. in 2007 and
2010.) team usa has won the women’s competition three consecutive times (2007, 2010, 2013), but
has only captured the men’s title once (2007). this
year’s duo of top-ranked amateur chris williams
and 2012 u.s. amateur champ steven fox finished
third, seven back of mexico. “i’m really proud of
this team,” said canadian captain robert ratcliffe.
“this event is a tough format, and it really means
that everyone on the team has to contribute.”
