it was not pretty, which is something seldom said
about this corner of maui on which the plantation
course was built at Kapalua. the first three days
of the Hyundai tournament of champions and
the pga tour season were a victim of an amalgam of the worst of which the weather is capable
here—squalls and wind gusts of 40 miles per hour
or more that prevented no more than a few holes
played on two of three days and postponing the
start of the tournament until yesterday, the day it
was supposed to end. ever seen a ball roll uphill, a
pin bent nearly parallel to the ground, rain pouring
sideways? that was Kapalua, until monday, when
the weather was postcard perfect and typical—
sunny and breezy, with molokai visible to varying
degrees on the horizon. it was nice enough to play
36, giving the Hyundai at least the aura of a tournament rather than a salvage operation. the leader
at the end of play yesterday was dustin Johnson
(shown) at 11 under par, three ahead of steve
stricker. the final round of a tournament reduced
to 54 holes will be played today. weather permit-ting, of course. —John Strege (@JohnStrege)
