things to watch for
undefeated seasons aren’t typically part of the narra-
tive in men’s college golf, and a week from now the idea
of california running the table in 2012-13 might already
be shuttered. still, as the team that won outright or
shared the title in all five of its fall starts begins its
spring campaign monday at the arizona intercollegiate,
credit the golden bears for not being afraid to dream
big. “i would love nothing more, and i think the guys
agree with me, to go into the ncaa championship at
13-0 [with] one tournament left to finish the job,” says
coach steve desimone (far left) knowing the chances of
losing at least one are great given the competition in
the college game. regaining the momentum of the fall is
no small task, but desimone’s charges stayed sharp
during the break. max homa, michael weaver, brandon
hagy and michael Kim attended the u.s. walker cup
05cal continues golden season
practice session last month. weaver, the u.s. amateur
runner-up, also snuck in 90 holes at augusta national
in preparation for his masters appearance in april. the
biggest challenge facing the bears is making sure they
haven’t peaked physically—or mentally—before the
postseason begins. to win everything would be nice,
but winning everything means taking the ncaa title.
